Cranial Sacral Therapy
Cranial Sacral (Craniosacral) Therapy
Cranial Sacral (Craniosacral) Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, spinal column, and sacrum. The treatment is performed on a massage table where the client is fully clothed and comfortable. The therapist’s touch is light and fairly still. The goal is to release compression in those areas which alleviates stress and pain.
Anyone who has endured trauma, be it physical or emotional, has “energetic knots” or distortions, that the practitioner can feel within the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. Practitioners use their hands to gently free restrictions in the cranial bones and associated soft tissues and to stimulate the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes all the surfaces of the brain and the spinal cord. Practitioners believe that distortions in the natural rhythms of the central nervous system may result from trauma of all sorts including birth trauma, childhood injuries, automobile accidents, even psychological trauma. (For years, mainstream medicine dismissed the idea – put forth in the 1930s by osteopath William Sutherland – that the cranial bones in the adult skull could move. However, researchers at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic medicine confirmed Sutherland’s theory in the late 1970s by showing cranial bone motion in X-ray films of the skulls of living subjects.)
Craniosacral treatment is always focused on supporting the health of the whole being, especially the nervous system. This is the system that dictates all of the body’s functioning, constantly sending and receiving information. The goal is to have an optimally functioning healthy nervous system.
Being trained for years on how to use acute perception skills to perceive subtle physiological changes can make one aware of the energetic map that underlies one’s basic health and symptomology. The belief is that health is never lost no matter what the ailment. When the therapist is working with Craniosacral techniques, the “always available health” within the body will assist the system in bringing itself back into balance. This amazing feature of our body supports greater ease and helps the body decrease symptoms.
